Hopped Up: Meet the Women Elevating the Beer Marketing Game

There’s not much a cold beer doesn’t pair well with. You could even say that beer itself is really just about things that go well together.

That makes Content on Draft an embodiment of the industry it operates in.

Amy Klein’s full-bodied knowledge of craft beer stems from her career at Rusty Nickel and a graduate education that took place across the pond. That’s topped off with a Level 1 Cicerone certification, which was explained to me as a sommelier of the beer world.

Morgan Culhane’s career milestones are a well-balanced blend of agency experience, a diverse writing portfolio, and a pure love for Buffalo and its small businesses.

Another perfect pair, I told you. Together, Amy and Morgan founded Content on Draft – a specialty social media marketing company that helps brewery owners and other members of the craft beverage industry.

“While social media is social media, a brewery’s social media strategy needs to be different from what a retail company’s social media would be,” Amy says. “There needs to be that deep understanding of industry.” Enter: Content on Draft.

Keeping it crafty.

Morgan and Amy first met at Canisius College when they were both staff members of The Griffin, the campus newspaper. The two kept in touch following graduation, and were pleased to discover that they worked as well together post-grad as they did in their college days.

“We niched down with the thought that us knowing how breweries work makes a difference,” they share. “A [general] social media manager may present a strategy that wouldn’t work for a brewery.”

And of course, a love of beer ties it all together, especially when profitability stems from good people, drinking good beer, and having a good time. “In this industry, I think getting along with our clients and the people we’re working with, tied to a passion for craft beer… that’s appreciated.”

Girls like beer, too.

I made sure to ask Morgan and Amy about their experience as females in the beer industry. “When you think of a person who likes craft beer, most people think of a hipster male, probably wearing a flannel, maybe with a man bun,” they admit. “Most people don’t immediately think of women liking beer.”

However, the business owners were quick to point out that their experiences in the beer industry have been anything but male-dominated. In fact, Amy leads the Buffalo chapter of the Pink Boots Society, a global organization that supports women working and advancing in the craft beverage industry.
