6 Local Businesses You Didn’t Know Were Woman-Owned

And if you don’t know, now you know… that by supporting these local organizations, you’re supporting the incredibly savvy businesswomen behind them.

1) Anderson’s Frozen Custard

One of WNY’s most beloved local chains is in fact, headed up by Holly Anderson, current owner and CEO. It was Holly’s parents who gave Anderson’s its humble roots, but now it’s Holly at the helm of the ice cream, roast beef, and curly fry empire.

2) New York Beer Project

Ever driven out to Lockport (or maybe even Victor) to enjoy a local brew and gastropub fare at the Beer Project? Well, you might not know that Kelly Krupski owns the business with her husband, Kevin. It was the New York City subway system that inspired the NYBP brand.

3) Borderland Music + Arts Festival

Pre-COVID, this East Aurora music festival was yet another way WNY had one-upped itself: an outdoor music and community event held annually at Knox Farm State Park. Jennifer Brazill is one of the owners and founders, making this unique event another woman-owned gem!

4) The Healthy Scratch

The Healthy Scratch is a local wellness brand known for its nutritious and delicious juice, smoothie, salad, and snack offerings. The company was founded by Jessie and Kelly Pegula (yes, those Pegulas) and does business in the LECOM HarborCenter, on the medical campus, and at cycling studio Revolution Buffalo (also woman-owned!).

5) Urban Fruits and Veggies

This organization is doing incredibly important work: An urban agricultural business promoting urban farms and farm-to-table eating, especially in areas where fresh produce is hard to come by. Allison DeHonney is President and CEO of this invaluable local company.

6) Becker Farms and Vizcarra Vineyards

If you live in Western New York, then you’ve interacted with Becker Farms somehow, in some way. Perhaps you’ve ventured out to Gosport to pick apples in the fall. Maybe you’ve bought their produce from the farmer’s market. Or you’ve attended a wedding or another event on the grounds. Owner Melinda Vizcarra is the feminine force behind this seasonal staple.
