These are diverse, women-run organizations that you should know about.

Here are six local, women-run organizations with diverse teams and beautiful missions:

We’re all taking notes.

  1. Urban Fruits & Veggies — Heard of food deserts? Then consider the idea that your zip code, not your genetic code, actually has more of an impact on your health and wellness. Buffalo is no exception. This local nonprofit breaks down barriers that may prevent urban residents from having access to fresh, locally-cultivated produce, while promoting the benefits of healthy eating.
  2. Western New York Peace Center — Upholding human rights and challenging instances of oppression, this organization’s mission statement is to make peace through justice at home and abroad.  There are plenty of opportunities to be an activist in the local community, but the Peace Center focuses on having an impact in the global community as well.
  3. That Brown Bag — That Brown Bag is Buffalo’s business directory for brown- and black-owned enterprises. Much like the mission of SFB, That Brown Bag emphasizes the value in consumers going out of their way to support a diverse group of business owners.
  4. Open Buffalo — Its mission is advancing racial, economic, and ecological justice. Open Buffalo addresses systematic issues by teaching individuals to create change via public policy and systems. A movement toward a more Just community is a better Buffalo for us all.
  5. VOICE-Buffalo — With a mission to bring force social justice and equity through organized, collective action, VOICE-Buffalo believes in the change that an empowered, active community can bring about. Their community calendar is a wonderful resource for individuals looking to get involved.
  6. Black Girls Hike Buffalo — The Buffalo chapter of a national movement, Black Girls Hike Buffalo looks to combat elevated health risk factors for women of color by encouraging women to get outside, and get active.
