Because supporting women in business is important.

Use #shesfrombuffalo on social media to celebrate the woman-owned and -operated businesses that make Western New York proud.

See where it all started:

Why promote women-owned businesses?

Of the 500 companies ranked in 2021 by Fortune, only 8.2 percent have female CEOs.

Just let that sink in.

Yes, women’s rights have come a long way in recent years. There are more policies regarding gender discrimination and sexual harassment in the workplace. We have a black, female Vice President and a major political party has backed a female candidate for President. It’s becoming more mainstream to discuss rape culture and the influence of the patriarchy.

We’ve come a long way, and yes, that should be acknowledged. But as that 8.2 percent reminds us, there’s still progress to be made.

I’m a big proponent of starting in your own backyard.

As in, we can’t tackle these issues on a global scale if we’re not starting conversations amongst family and friends, within our community.

Female-owned businesses don’t just happen.
